MonitorControl for Mac
MonitorControl is a powerful display control software whose main functions include adjusting the brightness, volume, and contrast of the display, and can display native brightness and volume OSD. It supports a variety of protocols to adjust brightness, including DDC (Brightness, Contrast, Volume) for external displays, native Apple protocols for Apple and built-in displays, Gamma meter control for software dimming, mask control for AirPlay, Sidecar, and Display Link devices, and other virtual screens.
Whether you’re using a Mac mini or Mac Pro, or you’ve just connected an external display to your iMac or MacBook for additional screen space, being able to control their brightness using the dedicated keys on your Apple keyboard would be awesome. Unfortunately, this isn’t normally possible with third-party monitors.
MonitorControl is an open-source app that could provide a solution in this scenario. It supports a wide range of monitors, provided they can be controlled via DDC, and it also allows you to manage their contrast and volume, all from the menu bar or with your keyboard.
Once you’ve installed the app, you should find its icon in the menu bar. You can change the polling mode, enable a longer delay, or disable the OSD entirely.
Key Features:

- Supports custom keyboard shortcuts as well as standard brightness and media keys on the Apple keyboard.
- Dozens of customization options to adjust how the app works internally to suit your hardware and needs (don’t forget to enable “Show advanced settings” in the app preferences).
- Simple, unobtrusive user interface that blends into the overall aesthetic of macOS.
- is one of the best apps in its category, completely free (donations welcome) and the source code is transparently available!
